Santa Ynez NMBS 2008

Sunday - "Downhill" Race Day

Seriously, how do you write a report on a race that you wish would not exist??  Albeit that the owner of Chamberlain Ranch did his best to provide a suitable track, this was one of the worst locations for a National race that I have ever seen.

With a turnout of 6 pro women, Melissa Buhl had an easy day in qualifying and finals.  Buhl decimated her nearest rival by

Due to the extreme temperatures, many riders took the opportunity of a very low pro turnout to coast and save their strength and energy for the final.

A few riders were lucky to automatically qualify since there were surprisingly a few flats and mechanicals.  John Hauer suffered a rear puncture at the middle of the track (on the "northshore" bridge) and crawled through the last flat section... until his Mongoose team mate Eric Carter came up behind him during his own qualifying run to give John a push to the finish line! Now that's teamwork!

As the final 21 men qualified it would be Waylon Smith who would take the fastest qualifying time.  Known for his fitness and speed, Waylon was sure to be a threat in the finals.  Other riders to take notice would be Brad Benedict and Ryan Condrashoff who were both tearing up the track during the weekend's practice sessions.  They were among the first to tackle the courses "variety" of obstacles and simply looked like they were hauling ass!  You can never count out Eric Carter and Rich Houseman, who have "officially" hung up their DH race bikes, but still take the opportunity to kick some butt when the courses suit them!  With a "slalom-esque" type track, you'd be an idiot to count them out!

During the finals, the winds picked up an HOWLED!   From the start, riders were faced with strong headwinds, which slowed the finishing times tremendously!  Though the wind might have change direction over the various parts of the track, it never stopped blowing!   Coming into the final FLAT sprint, riders were again faced with strong head winds!

With each of the 21 guys qualifying making it to the final, the race was over just as soon as it had started.   Eric Carter (who cruised during the morning's qualifying) took the early lead and held on strong til near the end.  Rider after rider took their turn at the WINDY track, but was lucky if they were able to manage to match their qualifying time.  Brad Benedict, who was looking strong all weekend, bested EC's time with 2 riders left to go.  Top qualifier, Waylon Smith, managed to place a third on the day, but captured the overall series lead!

EC's had a tough time lately, as his father is extremely ill at the moment.   Please keep the Carter family in your thoughts and prayers!

A huuuge turn out for the finish line!

Saturday - "Northshore Super-D" Practice & Dual Slalom Final

True to tradition, the day was all about schedule changes.  Pro "downhill" practice was originally scheduled to kick off at 11:30am (giving riders 2 hours of practice), but instead was pushed back until 3pm and relegated the riders to only one hour of practice.  Although the track was pretty straight forward, an hours worth of practice is pretty shady in my opinion.

Since I missed the previous day's downhill practice, I was a bit anxious to see the track, even though I knew there wouldn't be much to it.

With 100+ degree temperatures, and no where to turn for comfort, most riders simply passed out in the shade of their pits, or anywhere they could find shade.   Being in the middle of nowhere, there isn't much to do here, or anywhere to go.

When we finally got the pro downhill practice going, I was extremely disappointed to see what was laid out to ride.  This was by far one of the simplest, disappointing tracks I've seen put together for a "national" caliber event.   In my opinion, it took the worst parts of Sea Otter, Fontana, and Sonoma and made a race track.   To make matters worse, there were  wooden bridges, thrown in throughout the track - the largest being a over-under bridge (where the XC guys raced underneath while the downhillers rode over top.   I think all 10 rocks on the entire property were brought in & placed into the "rock garden" at the top of the course.

Anyhow, with that said,  a short travel bike track was definitely the ticket here.  I'll let the photos speak for the rest of the "northshore / super-d" report, since I'm just over it.   A few of the tree sections in the gully at the bottom of the track was alright... but with the addition of the wooden bridges, I was over it!

Pro Slalom finals were suppose to start at 7pm, but instead ran a bit late (big surprise)

Rich Houseman must have had a Monster Energy drink before the race because he put the power down!  His snap out of the gate was impressive to watch.  He laid down the power and torched the berms!

It was great seeing Chris Powell in the finals, but unfortunately this will probably be his last race of the season (other than probably the Jeep King of the Mountain Series coming up later in the year).  Chris hasn't found the support from sponsors so had decided to concentrate on his schooling (which he graduates from San Diego State on Monday!  Congrats man!)

EC was lookin smooth as ever... man, the guy just knows how to ride!  There were a good number of guys hitting the quad, many of them cased the hell out of it though.  I don't think I ever heard EC land.... smooth!

It was also great seeing Mike Haderer in the small finals.  Mikey has been lookin good all weekend.  He qualified well and followed it up with a stellar finish!

In the women's field, Melissa Buhl dominited, but the story of the weekend was the return of Leigh Donovan.  As I mentioned earlier, Leigh's basically on vacation, so don't expect to see a comeback to professional racing (although she would probably do extreme well).  Leigh had a blast and made it to the finals to race against Buhly.  With a advantage in the final, Buhly just needed to ride smart to take the victory.  Leigh unfortunately gave Buhly a bigger gift as she got snagged at the gate and took a digger right as the last run started.   As Leigh rode down, the crowd erupted and sent Leigh off in style.  Good times!

Men's Pro Final

1 Rich Houseman
2 Chris Powell
3 Eric Carter
4 Mike Haderer

Women Pro Final

1 Melissa Buhl
2 Leigh Donovan

Friday - Dual Slalom Qualifier

Hot, sunny and dry... Miserable!  There really isn't anything exciting to report here in Santa Ynez...   We're in the middle of no where, the temerature is about 100 degrees and there's nothing to do.   A little late on arrival,  I had to set up the Nema booth, so I missed morning downhill practice.  From what I heard, I didn't miss anything.  Out of the 35 riders on course, apparently only 15 were pros.  Pretty lame.  I hear the course is lame as well.   Although there isn't much elevation around, I guess there could have been more done... but you can always say that after the fact.  Oh well.   Many riders elected to cut their downhill practice short anyhow... Many riders had it already dialed, but with the day's heat increasing, many people were looking for shade and water.

While in the pits, it was a great surprise to see Leigh Donovan & her husband Stikman!  Apparently they're staring their vacation & wanted to hit up a race for fun.  Leigh will be racing dual slalom & super-d this weekend!  Should be great to see!  Although Leigh stated that she hasn't been riding much at all lately, you know she's still got some skills!

Dual Slalom practice & qualifying was pretty uneventful as well.  there were only about 20 pro men who showed up to qualify.  Therefore only 16 riders qualified.  It's gotta suck for some guys who came out here for just this event & a mistake cost them their weekend!

Here's a brief rundown on the top qualifying results for the day.

Men

1 EC 39.94
2 Chris Powell 40.44
3 Mike Haderer
4 Rich Houseman
5 Petr hanak

After a couple year hiatus, fan favorite Orlando Martinez has been hitting up the downhill and slalom again!

It was great to see Chris Powell back out tearing up the race track.  Keep an eye out for him at the Jeep KOM series!

Logan Binggeli

Riders had to hydrate by any means necessarly... Haderer might be drinking that gatorade from the wrong end!
